Style Panel: 9 ways to dress for your body type, no matter which trend you try

Dressing For Your Body Type Style-Panel
As snarky as What Not to Wear may be, hosts Stacy and Clinton seem to always get one thing right: many women have no idea how to dress for differing body types. Since we all know that no two bodies are exactly the same, 9 of our unique and uniquely beautiful Style Panelists took on the challenge and styled themselves in what shape suits them best. Whether it be with tight fitting clothing, loose pieces or even balancing out both, our stylish go-to girls were able to manage the trick of dressing for their bodies
Determining what shape of body you have is the most crucial step before you start playing around with looks. Although many ladies this week, including new member Melissa Knight, agree that they prefer wearing loose-fitting over tight clothing due to comfort, most say that confidence is the real key to pulling off a look that flatters anybody’s curves (take a cue from our next new member, Barbara Solomon, if you don’t believe us!)
So no matter what your shape or size, hopefully our Style Panel will inspire you to dress for your body, and just werk it.
Question 25: What’s your foolproof way to dress for your body type, no matter the trend Read the answers now! »

Last Thursday night Toronto’s most passionate science lovers descended into the ravine at Don Mills and Lawrence for the Ontario Science Centre’s annual LG Innovators’ Ball. This year’s theme was Fly Me to the Moon, a celebration of the museum’s newest exhibition Beyond Planet Earth: The Future of Space Exploration on loan from the American Museum of Natural History until January 1. The space-age décor was like travelling to another solar system, with planets hanging from the ceiling and walls covered in glittering stars. After a retro-glam cocktail reception, guests were treated to a performance by singer Matt Dusk who opened with a rendition of “Fly Me to the Moon.” Matt Galloway of CBC Radio’s Metro Morning stayed up way past his bedtime to provide hosting duties for the ball, even getting chided by Innovator Award recipient and former premier of Ontario the Honourable William G. Davis, who joked that his wife’s listening to the early morning radio show “delayed his breakfast.” The futuristic dinner, with a flashing salad course followed by deconstructed soup, was followed by a tour of the exhibition. Houston, we have a party. Read more »

Robert Pattinson follows in Kristen Stewart’s footsteps: He’s signed a deal to promote perfumes with Dior

If imitation is the most sincere form of flattery, consider Kristen Stewart to be blushing. Stewart—the face of Balenciaga’s Florabotanica—can now offer her boyfriend and fictional vampire husband, Robert Pattinson, some tips on being the face of a fragrance because he has reportedly signed a contract with Dior.
RPatz will be modeling for men’s fragrance campaigns (unlike a certain Brad Pitt we know) and a source told E! News, “Rob likes the brand.” We consider that statement has to be true because Robert wore Dior Homme while walking both the red carpets at the Teen Choice Awards and the Cannes Film Festival. Linda Evangelista: Our 35th Anniversary issue cover star talks family and fashion in this excerpt

Hair by Brent Lavett for Art Department/Lavett & Chin. Makeup by Sam Addington for Kramer + Kramer. Manicure by Julie Kandalec for Bernstein & Andriulli/Chanel. Fashion assistant, Melaney Oldenhof.
Off-duty, she’s into family, fashion and fitness. But it’s Linda Evangelista’s gift for bringing clothes to life that makes her the most super model of all.

First and foremost, there is that face—a transcendent convergence of flesh and bone that you can’t take your eyes off. But beauty alone does not explain what makes Linda Evangelista the greatest fashion model alive, or, quite possibly, who has ever lived.
Evangelista also has taste and pluck. They inform her work and the pride she takes in that work. As she, less gushily, puts it, “I like what I do.” What is it that she does, exactly? It’s fair to wonder. Watching her in Pamela Hanson’s New York studio shooting FASHION’s 35th anniversary cover, I get to see.
Since I first met Linda Evangelista, backstage at Chanel in the autumn of 1987, I’ve seen her do lots of shows. She’s done them all. But it’s her record of print jobs, her performances in front of a camera—her preferred audience—that test her skills and give her the bigger kicks. Years ago, she told me, “My book kills.” That’s still true. In the past year, Evangelista has appeared in some of the most memorable images, both charming and daring, of her career. On the cover of Italian Vogue, she was a mambo queen, ruling the beat with a pair of maracas. Inside the September issue of W, she was a super-freak, naked under a latex cape and transparent catsuit. As a mannequin, Evangelista is more than willing; she’s also capable. She doesn’t just put on a garment; she populates it. Watching her, I realize what she meant when she long ago told me, “Once I’ve worn an outfit, I feel I’ve really worn it.”

Party Hardy! Finally—I’ve been waiting to say that ever since FASHION received an invite to Canadian design star Paul Hardy’s 10th anniversary bash in Calgary on Saturday. It was an exclusive guest list, after all, (including Dragon’s Den billionaire W. Brett Wilson and his date, the Real Housewives of Vancouver’s Mary Zilba as well as Vancouver’s blonde and bubbly country singing sisters, Carly and Britt McKillip of One More Girl), and might have been the biggest, brightest, boldest birthday party to ever hit the Alberta fashion scene.
Mr. Hardy and Travel Alberta flew in fashion’s top editors, bloggers and VIP’s from Vancouver to Toronto, including the Globe & Mail’s Tiyana Grulovic, Hello! Canada’s Tara Henley, FASHION’s resident street style photographer Stefania Yarhi, and Style Panel’s Gracie Carroll. After waking up in the swanky Hyatt Regency Calgary and chic-boutique Hotel Arts, the first snowfall of the season made our trek to the island River Café feel like some kind of wonderland—or as Hardy perfectly positioned it, “Narnia”.

We have all heard of the Little Black Dress, the origins of which can be traced back to designs of Coco Chanel’s from the 1920s. But what do we know of the Little Black Jacket? Luckily for us, Chanel has a website devoted to this iconic piece of clothing.
Karl Lagerfeld has been celebrating this classic piece of fashion history in his new book, The Little Black Jacket: CHANEL’S classic revisited by Karl Lagerfeld and Carine Roitfeld, and with a new exhibition on display in London a couple of weeks ago that will make its way to Tokyo, Paris and New York among other cities.
But if you don’t live in any of the cities that the exhibition is traveling to, don’t fret as Chanel’s website has it available to view online. The result is a who’s-who’s of the fashion and celebrity crowd showcased in over 100 photographs of them putting their own spin on the jacket. The innovative online exihibtion takes Alice Dellal to Vanessa Paradis among others on a unique animated spin across your computer screen.

It’s official, Spring 2013 fashion month is over. And after receiving a daily dose of street style photos and runway updates, it would be silly for us to ignore the trends that we saw day after day (after day, after day). It’s hard not to fall victim to sensory overload, but thankfully our street style photographer, Stefania Yarhi, made it easy for us to pick and choose which trends we know we’ll be seeing all spring long. With hundreds of photos from Paris, Milan, London, New York, and Toronto at our disposal, we just couldn’t ignore the countless graphic tops (a day without a Balenciaga sci-fi sweater sighting was a total shocker), exposed bellies, suits, and mixed prints—so we didn’t because we’re positive they will be huge come Spring 2013. We’ve selected 10 of the biggest fashion trends from the streets and the runways and put them together in one place, so gets to clickin’. The leaves may just be starting to fall, but it’s never too early to plan for spring, right? (RIGHT!)
